About Us
Flathead Land Trust is dedicated to protecting northwest Montana’s spectacular land and water legacy through community-based conservation.
Our Origin Story
Born from a desire to preserve the essence of the Flathead Valley for future generations, a local land trust was established in 1985 by a group of forward-thinking community members.
Our founders aimed to preserve the Flathead Valley’s essence amidst growth. They envisioned an organization safeguarding those qualities that make this a remarkable place to live and raise families while continuing our Montana way of life.
A Sense of Place
We are fortunate to live in one of the most spectacular places in Montana and the world. We enjoy Glacier National Park, millions of acres of public lands, excellent water quality, abundant fish and wildlife, and unsurpassed recreational opportunities. Our watershed is at the head of the great Columbia River system and contains the largest, natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi – Flathead Lake. Our valley also contains some of the richest farmland and soils in the country.
Flathead Land Trust plays a key role in conserving this incredible natural heritage for future generations.
How It Works
We partner with private landowners, agencies and the community to ensure that open space, fish and wildlife habitat, clean water and other important conservation values will be maintained forever. Through conservation easements and collaborative community conservation projects, we help to preserve the special places in northwest Montana.
Flathead Land Trust is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) nationally accredited land conservation organization. We primarily serve the Flathead Valley in Flathead County, however, we also work throughout northwest Montana and hold conservation easements in Lake, Sanders, and Missoula counties.
